This Moment’s Question – Doing Nothing

A student experienced a profound decrease in her stress level after just 12 weeks of mindfulness practice and asked: How can just sitting and doing nothing change everything?

You don’t do nothing.

You observe and everything changes so profoundly.

By imbuing the river of life’s unfolding and enfolding with awareness, you leave nothing undone. You create a space between your stubborn will and your actions – a space of contemplation and freedom of choice – and this space reveals possibilities beyond your wildest imagination. Shining awareness like that into the tiniest nooks and crannies of your being is not doing nothing – it is doing the only thing that saves your life and seeing how all your previous doings (the real ‘doingnothings’) were nothing more than treading water. Awareness is itself transformative, before you even modify your energy flow through skillful attention.

Can you experience that in your own flesh and blood? Can you discover how that works, why that is?
