RETREATS

to Meditation Programs
Overview
The
meditation practices are easy, but it is difficult to practice meditation.
It takes fortitude and a willingness to respond to the whispered longings
of one’s soul. Our habits of distracting ourselves from what is most
important in life run deep and powerfully. Self-exploration and
transformation present thus difficult challenges, an adventure that will
interest only those individuals, who wish to taste and explore new ways of
knowing and being in the form of their own moment-to-moment experience.
Retreats can never be substitutes for heeding the
moment-to-moment call of mindfulness in the middle of life’s fray. But
they can strengthen our commitment and provide powerful experiences that
sustain our practice in ordinary times of daily mindlessness and stress.
They are an invitation to venture on this journey in the company of a
group of fellow practitioners, who are also looking for new ways of
knowing and being. These new ways of knowing and being can make a huge
difference in one's life as a leader, an innovator, a creator, a person
embedded in the warp and woof of personal, family, and professional life.
People are often concerned about the time meditation practice
takes out of their lives, let alone the time a retreat takes
out of a busy schedule and work commitments. But experience shows
repeatedly, that when we do not take the time to practice, to take care of
ourselves in deep ways, to tend to the goose that lays the golden eggs, we
will sooner or later be forced to take time to be sick and address the
damage done from years of neglect. Through practice, or taking a retreat and surrendering to time, we discover that it is not time we
take out of our lives, but in fact time we take into our lives, that can enrich the rest of our days and moments.
Retreats afford the opportunity to explore the power of mindfulness -
moment-to-moment, non-judgmental attention - for expanding our capacity to
see, to learn, and to grow, both as individuals and as professionals. They
include periods of guided instruction in a number of meditation practices,
periods of silent exploration, and periods of collective inquiry and
dialogue, all aimed at cultivating deep, penetrating awareness and
insight, and the creativity that flows from it.
Retreats balance meditation practice on one hand, and conceptual
processing through discussion and dialogue on the other. Different
retreats feature different relative weighting
of the time spent in meditation and conceptualization, depending on
the scope and structure of the retreat.
