MBSR for chronic conditions

This OHIP-covered Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program is modified to address the specific needs of patients with chronic conditions (MBSR-CC). It is ideal for patients who are experiencing decreased functioning in day-to-day living as a result of chronic physical, emotional or mental conditions.

Taught by Dr. Frances O’Malley.

Chronic stress is a reality of everyday life for many of us and causes much suffering. It affects our body/mind in a myriad of ways and can contribute greatly to both psychological and physical pain. Mindfulness helps us relate to the stresses of everyday life in a way that increases our resilience and decreases our suffering.  We develop skills that help us show up for more moments of our lives and in so doing we can live more fully and with more ease.

This 12-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program is based on research around chronic pain and trauma-informed methods, and therefore suitable for anyone suffering from long term diseases such as chronic pain or anxiety. It is rooted in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program pioneered by Jon Kabat Zin and draws upon later modifications made by Dr. Jackie Gardner-Nix, to meet the needs of patients with chronic pain. This program incorporates concepts of Interpersonal Neurobiology, a term coined by Dr. Dan Siegel, to describe an interdisciplinary field which explores new understandings of the mind.

The meditations within this course are introduced slowly and for short periods (initially 5-10 minutes). Meditations include sitting and walking practices and body scans. Each class will include a short talk, covering topics such as the effects of stress on the mind/body and the impact of developmental trauma. Participants will learn how neuroplasticity can be harnessed to change old habit patterns and develop new skills. Self-care practices will be promoted through mindful eating, physical activity and sleep hygiene. These topics will be explored in the spirit of self-compassion. The role of mindfulness to address and resolve interpersonal conflict will be touched upon. During the later classes, participants are encouraged to explore suffering through their own creative expression as a path to transformation and healing.

Each session follows a similar structure to the MBSR-X program:

  1. Introduction to a new mindfulness meditation technique
  2. Guided meditation practice
  3. Processing of participants’ practice experience
  4. Introduction to a new topic
  5. General Q&A
  6. Other group exercises

MBSR-CC is suitable for those with little or no mindfulness experience. The demands of this course are sensitive to those experiencing chronic pain or other chronic diseases. It is accessible to anyone who may require a slower pace.

The MBSR-CC program comprises 12 weekly online classes via Zoom, each of 2½ hours in duration. To find out more about the dates of upcoming programs, please contact Dr. O’Malley at info.MBSRCC@protonmail.com .

If you want to participate, please have a referral sent by your family physician, or other health care provider to the same email. Self-referrals are also accepted. After referral, you will receive an email to book your initial assessment (covered by OHIP). This appointment will take place in-person in Dr. O’Malley’s Stratford office. If MBSR-CC is recommended following the assessment, you will be put on the list for the next available program.

Except for an optional fee of $35.00 for course materials, the MBSR-CC programs are covered by OHIP. The course materials include a download of meditations and a course manual.
