I have been practicing, studying and teaching mindfulness for over five decades. As a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and contemplative practitioner, I have watched it transform lives — including my own. I have also watched the word itself slowly hollow out, absorbed into wellness culture until it became synonymous with stress reduction, productivity hacks, and app notifications reminding you to breathe. The word no longer carries the depth of what I teach.
The problem with mindfulness:
Mindfulness, as most people now understand it, points to a practice of present-moment attention. That is not wrong. But it is quite incomplete. What the great contemplative traditions were pointing to - and what neuroscience has by now confirmed - is something far more fundamental. Not just a technique for managing the contents of the mind, but a process of structural change at the core of mind itself.
The still point:
The ground of open, empty awareness prior to thought, prior to narrative, prior to the self we construct moment by moment - the still point - is not readily visible, or even accessible. When we learn to make genuine contact with that ground, something shifts. Not because we have added something new. But because we have stopped adding - and allowed the mind’s own deepest intelligence to reorganize from within. That is not mindfulness as most people practice it. That is something else entirely.
What I call the body of work at The Mindfulness Centre:
The term I use that I believe captures the work embedded in all my programs is Core Mind Realigning:
Core — because it operates at the deepest, most originary substrate of mind. Not the surface of thought or emotion, but the ground from which they arise.
Mind — because this is about energy and information flow and its regulation, consciousness and awareness, not just brain states or behaviour.
Realigning — because what happens at depth is not fixing, not managing, not adding. It is a structural reorientation toward greater coherence, integration, and presence. A coming back into alignment with what we most fundamentally are.
Core Mind Realigning is a contemplative and clinical framework that works at the deepest substrate of mind - the still point of open, empty awareness - to enable structural reorientation and integration below the level of thought and narrative. Drawing on mindfulness, neuroscience, psychotherapy, and consciousness disciplines it is a process of structural change at the core of mind itself, and the foundation of all programs at The Mindfulness Centre, including the MBSR-X program, the Mindsight Intensive, and Mobility Mind.
